ABSTRACT: Issue 2 of GR-3160-CORE, Generic Requirements for Telecommunications Data Center Equipment and Spaces, presents minimum spatial
and environmental requirements for data center equipment and spaces. Of particular interest are the data center spaces operated by
Telecommunications Carriers. These criteria were developed jointly by Telcordia and industry representatives. They may be applied to
data center spaces housing data processing or Information Technology (IT) equipment.

The equipment housed in a Telecommunications Data Center may be used to:
    • Support and manage a Telecommunications Carrier's own telecommunications network

    • Provide data-center-based applications directly to the Telecommunications Carrier's customers

    • Provide hosted applications for a third party to provide services to their customers

    • Provide a combination of these and similar data center applications.

Compliance with these requirements may increase network reliability, simplify equipment installation, and promote the economical
planning, engineering, and operation of data center equipment spaces.

Data center equipment, by nature of its physical installation in a building, may be exposed to environmental stresses. The generic
criteria in this document are intended to help avoid equipment damage and malfunction caused by environmental impacts such as
temperature, humidity, and vibrations; and to minimize fire ignitions and fire spread, as well as provide for improved space planning
    and thermal management.

Issue 2 includes the latest industry trends with respect to operating temperatures and equipment airflow. It also allows for a
determination of the applicable environmental equipment requirements based on data center characteristics and the nature of the service
    provided.

    GR-3160, Issue 2, replaces GR-3160, Issue 1.

    When using GR-3160, you may need to refer to GR-78, GR-209, GR-295, GR-1089, GR-1275, GR-1502, GR-2930,
GR-3028, as well as various standards documents.
