    ABSTRACT: Issue 2 of GR-3015, RTPFR: Generic Requirements for the Signaling system 7 (SS7) Release to Pivot (RTP) Phase II Network Capability, replaces Issue 1.

    This document contains the Telcordia view of proposed generic requirements for the use of the Integrated Services Digital Network User Part (ISUP) of Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) by a Stored Program Controlled Switching System (SPCS) to support the Release to Pivot (RTP) network capability. For simplicity, the SPCS is referred to as a switch throughout this document. This document defines the second phase of RTP, known as RTP Phase II. GR-2857 defines RTP Phase I. GR-3015 augments the GR-2857 generic requirements.

    The RTP network capability permits an RTP switch that has received a call from another RTP switch, and has determined the call should be connected to a destination switching system other than itself, to optionally release the call back to the switch earlier in the call path. Sufficient information is provided in the release to enable the new connection to be established from the earlier switch. The destination switching system does not have to be RTP- or even SS7-capable, but if the new destination is RTP-capable, in a future version of RTP, the RTP switch may also set up the new call leg using RTP functionality.

    RTP is an optional routing capability that builds on existing SS7 call setup procedures. RTP is a generic network capability that is invoked in support of service or business needs, and not directly by an end user.

    Issue 2 of GR-3015 contains the following changes:

    • describes Bearer Independent Call Control (BICC) signaling and the call scenarios in which BICC signaling is used. BICC signaling is used to establish, process, and release calls over an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) or Internet Protocol (IP) backbone network.
    • references the BICC generic requirements in GR-3100 for call scenarios in which BICC signaling is used, rather than ISUP signaling.
    • refers to logical traffic groups, rather than physical trunk groups, whenever BICC signaling is used.
    • refers to Serving Nodes (SNs), rather than switches whenever BICC signaling is used.


    When using GR-3015, you may need to refer to GR-3100, GR-690, GR-1144, and/or GR-1277. You may also want to refer to GR-478, GR-1298, GR-2974, and GR-3016.
