Framework Generic Requirements for Voice over Packet (VoP) Network Services

    ABSTRACT: Issue 1 of GR-3060, Framework Generic Requirements for Voice over Packet (VoP) Network Services, contains the Telcordia view of
    proposed Framework Generic Requirements for Voice over Packet (VoP) Network Services. The framework generic requirements in this
    document are based on the Framework Architecture material on VoP Networks and VoP Network Services in SR-4717.

    The purpose of this GR is to document the philosophy and architecture associated with decomposition of conventional Public Switched
    Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) services across the various elements in a VoP network, identify
    the common signaling protocols used by these VoP network elements to allow for the provision of VoP Network Services to end users,
    serve as a common reference for subsequent GRs documenting the specifics of groups of VoP Network Services, and to serve as an
    updatable repository of all protocols used to support all VoP Network Services.

    This Framework GR describes procedures for providing VoP Network Services using functionality distributed among the following VoP
    network elements: the Call Connection Agent (CCA), the Services Agent (SA), the Access Gateway (AG), and the Signaling Gateway (SG).

    This Framework GR is not intended to provide complete requirements for VoP Network Services. Instead, it will serve as the
    foundation for comprehensive service requirements in other GRs to be developed. The specific services that are covered in such future
    GRs will depend on the direction of the funding clients for those GRs.

    GR-3060 addresses the following types of services, which are provided to VoP Network end-users who are connected to the VoP Network
    at the Access Gateway:
    • Residential and business services for users connected to the AG by conventional PSTN line-side interfaces. These services are
      drawn from such conventional service categories as Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) services, Basic Business Group (BBG) or Centrex
      Services, Custom Local Calling Area Signalling Services (CLASS), and Intelligent Network (IN) Services

    • Residential and business services for users connected to the AG by ISDN Basic Rate Interfaces (BRIs)

    • Private Branch Exchange (PBX) Services for users connected to the AG by conventional PSTN trunk-side interfaces

    • PBX Services for users connected to the AG by ISDN Primary Rate Interfaces (PRI).

    This issue of the Framework GR covers both pre-IN and IN Transaction Capabilities Application Part (TCAP) protocols for VoP Network
    Services. Pre-IN TCAP is used with Toll-Free Service and Calling Name Identification Services in PSTNs today. IN TCAP is used with
    Local Number Portability service in PSTNs today. Both pre-IN TCAP and IN TCAP are included in this Framework GR to support VoP Network
    interworking with existing PSTN implementations of these services.

    To facilitate rapid introduction of new network services in the VoP network environment, this Framework GR also describes a
    framework for an Application Programming Interface (API) to allow for third-party service creation. The API connects an external
    Service Definition Environment (SDE) to the CCA and SA in the VoP Network and allows a third party to create new VoP Network Services
    for end users on the VoP Network.

    When using GR-3060, you may need to refer to GR-30, GR-317, GR-533, GR-3051, GR-3055, and ANSI T1.667, You may
    also need to refer to GR-1188, GR-3053, and/or GR-3054.
