Document Number GR-950
Issue Number 03
Issue Date Dec 2010
Replaces TR-NWT-000950 Issue01
ABSTRACT: An Optical Network Unit (ONU) transforms incoming optical signals into electronics at a customer's premises. An ONU closure is a
mechanical compartment that houses the ONU equipment. An ONU system consists of a closure that is a metallic or non-metallic enclosure
that provides physical and environmental protection for the active electronic, optoelectronics, and passive optical components it
This document sets forth the Telcordia view of the generic requirements and characteristics required for ONU closures and systems.
It is the Telcordia view that these generic requirements be met in order to meet the needs of a typical Service Provider.
This document provides criteria for analyzing ONU closures and systems used in a variety of Outside Plant (OSP) environments and
applications, including those used in building entrance facilities. It includes functional design criteria, generic mechanical and
environmental requirements, desired features, and the performance tests used for comparing ONU closures and systems with the stated
The performance tests for analyzing ONU closures and systems are intended to reflect a composite picture of standard installation
and operating conditions.
This new issue of GR-950 is completely re-vamped and updated, and covers all the newest developments in ONU closure and system
The All New Issue 3 contains:
- An analysis of ONU closures now used in a variety of OSP environments and applications, including those used in building
- Harmonization with the variety of Telcordia GRs and other standards documents
- All new test procedures and criteria for numerous scenarios and environmental conditions
- Covers the latest in Electrical Safety, Bonding and Grounding, and Telecommunications Surge Protection areas.
Issue 3 of GR-950, Generic Requirements for Optical Network Unit (ONU) Closures and ONU Systems, replaces Issue 2.
