ABSTRACT: Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) is an optical interface standard that uses a synchronous multiplexing scheme for use in transport
networks. SONET provides standard transmission at the Synchronous Transport Signal Level 1 (STS-1) rate of 51.84 Mbps. SONET,
supported by enhanced management systems and combined with other technologies, such as Integrated Digital Loop Carrier (IDLC), will
provide a wide range of applications and services.
This Special Report (SR), the SONET Network and Operations Plan (NOP), provides SONET network, operations, and synchronization
information to Local Exchange Carriers, other service providers, and suppliers. The document looks at the impact of SONET on network
architecture and technology, operations functions and management systems, and other technologies that interact with SONET.
