Generic Requirements and Design Considerations for Optical Digital Signal Cross-Connect Systems

ABSTRACT: Optical fiber transmission systems were initially introduced into telecommunications networks in the interoffice transmission plant and
now have moved to the loop plant. As the number of these systems increases and the number of high transmission rate intraoffice
systems grows, there will be a need for a dedicated cross-connect frame, the Optical Digital Signal Cross-Connect (ODSX). ODSX frames
must simultaneously support a wide range of digital bit rates and transmissions system formats and are expected to be the optical
technology version of the metallic Digital Signal Cross-Connect (DSX) system.
This Technical Advisory (TA) describes the preliminary view of Telcordia on generic requirements and design considerations for ODSX
systems. In the view of Telcordia, these requirements, if applied to any ODSX system, regardless of the technologies employed in the
design or manufacture, should meet the needs of a typical service provider.
