Generic Requirements for SMDS Networking

Document Number TA-TSV-001059
Issue Number 02
Issue Date Aug 1992

    ABSTRACT: This document replaces SR-TSV-002198.

This Technical Advisory (TA) presents the view of Telcordia on preliminary Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS) networking
generic requirements for a Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) network. Here "SMDS" encompasses Exchange SMDS, Exchange Access SMDS
(XA-SMDS), and LEC-ILEC (Independent Local Exchange Carrier) serving arrangements for SMDS. To support SMDS, each Switching System
(SS) in a LEC network needs to support generic networking functions, such as data transport, routing, congestion management, load
    splitting, and feature-support functions.

This TA defines SS requirements for these functions. These requirements cover the Inter-Switching System Interface (ISSI) Protocol
(ISSIP) for data transport, the ISSI Routing Management Protocol (RMP) for the transport of network routing information and the
identification of the Congestion Management Protocol (CMP) for the generation, distribution, and receipt of Explicit Congestion
Notification (ECN) messages, the SMDS load splitting algorithm, and the distribution of SMDS feature-support functions throughout the
